A grizzly bear attack at West Creston Wildlife Park Saturday afternoon left a man seriously injured and prompted immediate trail closures.

July 28, 2025: A man and his wife were e-biking along the Kootenay River around 4:30 p.m. on July 26, 2025, when two grizzly bears appeared.

The wife was alerted to the danger by her husband's screams. When she turned, she saw a bear charging toward her.

Using bear spray, she managed to fend off the bear. She then spotted a second bear actively mauling her husband.

She used the bear spray again and successfully stopped the attack on her husband.

Both bears then ran away.

The man sustained significant injuries and was rushed by ambulance to Cranbrook, where he underwent surgery.

The woman was physically unharmed.

Emergency Response and Search

RCMP and Conservation Officers (COs) responded quickly, sweeping the area for the bears.

Although traps were set overnight, no bears were captured. COs returned the next morning, located the attack site, and conducted another search — but again found no sign of the animals.

As a precaution, three major trails in the area remain closed, with signage installed to warn the public.

Safety Measures and Acknowledgment

The B.C. Conservation Officer Service continues to monitor the area and urges visitors to avoid it until further notice.
