Tractor Fire Claims Life of Farmer in Lumby Blaze

July 23 2026 - A man died Wednesday afternoon after a tractor and baler he was operating caught fire on a rural property north of Lumby, sparking a fast-moving grass fire amid extremely dry conditions.

Vernon North Okanagan RCMP responded around 2:25 p.m. on July 22 to reports of an out-of-control fire in the 1300 block of Trinity Valley Road.
Neighbours helped contain the flames from reaching the residence until the Lumby Fire Department arrived, while BC Wildfire Service helicopters provided aerial support.

The fire, now known as the Trinity Creek wildfire, spread rapidly from the field to nearby trees and fully engulfed a hay shed, which could not be saved. The man was found deceased near the burnt-out tractor and baler.
“Tragically, the man was unable to escape the fire,” said Cst. Chris Terleski, Media Relations Officer for the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP. “Our sincerest condolences go out to his family, friends, and the community during this incredibly difficult time.”
The BC Coroners Service is conducting a concurrent investigation. The RCMP file number is 2026-4314.
