Surrey Comes to Vernon: RCMP Spike Belt Stops Fleeing Driver

July 13, 2026Â - A 23-year-old man from Surrey is in custody after Vernon North Okanagan RCMP used a spike belt to end a dangerous flight through town Saturday evening.

Just before 6 p.m. on July 11, officers responded to a suspicious vehicle on 25th Avenue.
When a frontline officer tried to pull the vehicle over on 24th Avenue, the driver sped off at a high rate of speed.
Police chose not to pursue for public safety reasons
Later that night, the same vehicle was located stopped in the Predator Ridge neighbourhood.
Officers, supported by an RCMP Police Dog Service team, set up containment and deployed a spike belt.
When the driver tried to leave, the vehicle was disabled by the spikes.The man was taken into custody without further incident.
He remains in custody and is expected to appear in court today on multiple criminal charges.No one was injured.
