Spring Warmth in Vernon Brings Hidden Dehydration Risk

VERNON, B.C - As temperatures climb into the pleasant 20–28°C range this spring, more residents are heading outdoors for hikes, gardening, and walks, and many are feeling unusually tired afterward. The culprit may be the Okanagan’s characteristically dry air quietly increasing fluid loss, even when it doesn’t feel like you’re sweating.

Summers not here yet but the dry air is

Over the past couple of weeks, daytime relative humidity in Vernon has frequently dropped to 20–35% during the afternoon hours when people are most active.

While overnight humidity often climbs much higher (50–90%), pulling the overall 24-hour average to around 45%, it’s those low daytime sunlight hours that matter most for dehydration risk.

Even if you’re not actively sweating, you are still losing moisture through your skin and every time you breathe out. This is known as insensible water loss (or insensible perspiration).

In dry conditions, the rate goes up significantly.Depending on activity level, people can need 0.5 to 2+ extra litres of water per day, or even more during moderate outdoor exertion like gardening or hiking in the sun.

Warmer weather encourages that activity, creating a perfect storm: you feel good being outside, but your body is losing fluids faster than usual.

This effect tends to be stronger for older adults and those who are more active. The dryer daytime air amplifies unnoticed dehydration, especially in spring when indoor heating can dry the air further.

Common signs of mild dehydration include:

  • Fatigue or sluggishness

  • Headache

  • Dry mouth or lips

  • Darker yellow urine

  • Dizziness when standing

  • Dry skin or eyes

What can you do? Stay ahead of it. Drink water proactively throughout the day, don’t wait until you’re thirsty. Aim for pale yellow urine, carry a bottle when you head outdoors, and consider water-rich foods like fruits and vegetables. On warm, dry Vernon days, a little extra hydration makes all the difference between feeling great after being active and wondering why you’re dragging.

Enjoy the sunshine, get outside and remember to hydrate.
