Open Burning Now Prohibited in Vernon

Vernon, B.C. - Category 2 and Category 3 open burning is now banned in the City of Vernon.
The prohibition, which took effect at noon on Thursday, May 7, was implemented in coordination with the Kamloops Fire Centre. It will remain in place until October 19, 2026, or until it is lifted.
The measure aims to reduce the risk of human-caused wildfires and protect public safety.
Anyone who had Category 2 or 3 fires burning yesterday was required to fully extinguish them by noon on May 7.
What’s banned:
Category 2 fires (piles up to 2m high x 3m wide, or grass/stubble burning up to 0.2 hectares)
Category 3 fires (larger piles, windrows, or areas bigger than 0.2 hectares)
Air curtain burners, carbonizers, and controlled air incinerators
Binary exploding targets
Fireworks
Burn barrels or burn cages (except for approved small Category 1 campfires)
Still allowed:
Small campfires (maximum 0.5m high by 0.5m wide)
Gas, propane, or briquette cooking stoves
