June 24 2026 - With reservoir levels critically low, Greater Vernon Water (GVW) has expanded a temporary switch to a backup groundwater source, affecting more residential customers in the Lavington area to help protect agricultural supplies during Stage 3 water restrictions.

The Regional District of North Okanagan (RDNO) first announced the change on June 12, 2026, shifting some customers from the main Duteau Creek surface water source to the Antwerp Deep Well.

On June 24, officials expanded the affected zone to include additional addresses on Brewer Road, sections of Highway 6, Aberdeen Road North, and areas near Kalamalka Lake Road.

Officials continue to aim for an overall 50% reduction in community water use.

Greater Vernon, officials are using the approved Antwerp Deep Well (a protected groundwater aquifer treated with chlorine) to supply more homes. This frees up limited surface water from Duteau for agricultural needs, where some farms face 70% reductions in allocation.

GVW says some customers in the expanded area may notice minor differences in taste, smell, or appearance due to naturally occurring manganese in the groundwater, but the water remains safe and meets all provincial standards.

No service interruptions are expected, and water quality is being closely monitored.

The source switch is temporary and will be reversed when reservoir levels recover. Residents are urged to continue strict conservation efforts as warmer weather increases demand.

Updates and maps of the affected areas are available on the RDNO website at rdno.ca/news.
