North Okanagan Wakes Up to Smoke-Filled Skies and Falling Ash

July 23, 2026 - Residents across the North Okanagan, including Coldstream and Vernon, woke this morning to smoke-filled skies and fine ash visibly falling.

Skyward-facing cameras captured particles drifting down and accumulating on surfaces.

Most likely source for the smoke and ash is the Brunswick Creek wildfire complex near Boston Bar in the Fraser Canyon. This fire, part of the larger Boston Bar group, has grown rapidly in recent days, sending large plumes northeast into the Okanagan Valley on prevailing winds.

Current Conditions (mid-morning):  

• Vernon Air Quality Index: 162 (Unhealthy)  

• PM2.5: ~70.7 µg/m³ (the fine particles making up the smoke and falling ash)

Air quality is expected to improve gradually through the day as the smoke plume shifts and disperses, though poor conditions may persist into the afternoon in some areas.

This level of smoke poses a health risk, especially for children, older adults, pregnant people, and anyone with heart or lung conditions. Even healthy individuals may experience eye, nose, and throat irritation.

Officials recommend staying indoors with windows closed when possible and using N95 or better masks if going outside.
