July 16 2026 - At least eight new wildfires have started across British Columbia in the past 48 hours, several burning out of control.

A new fire (V10858), now 15 hectares and out of control, was discovered Monday burning close enough to Highway 5 on the Coquihalla that smoke is clearly visible to drivers near the Coquihalla River.
The large Brunswick Complex near Boston Bar continues to burn aggressively.
Highway 1 through the Fraser Canyon is open but restricted to single-lane alternating traffic, a 60 km/h speed limit, and a strict no-stopping rule in the fire zone.
Check DriveBC.ca right before you go, the road could close again on short notice.

Smaller new fires are also active in southeast B.C. near Kelowna, Nelson and Revelstoke.
Two fires east of Kelowna/Lake Country were caught quickly and contained before they could grow.
Many of the new starts are under investigation, with both lightning and human activity suspected. Today’s forecast includes a risk of dry lightning, strong afternoon winds, and widespread smoke already reducing visibility on Interior highways.
Conditions can change fast, travellers heading across B.C. should check DriveBC and the BC Wildfire Service maps.
