The scene shows the severely damaged black Toyota Corolla resting in the ditch with extensive front-end damage and debris scattered across the embankment

Salmon Arm RCMP say the crash occurred at approximately 7:08 a.m. on the Trans-Canada Highway east of Kangaroo Road.

The investigation is in its early stages but RCMP believe the rented Toyota Corolla was travelling eastbound when it attempted to pass a semi-truck and was struck head-on by a westbound semi with trailer.

The Corolla spun off the road into the eastbound ditch, ejecting its engine. Three of the four occupants were trapped inside and had to be extricated using the Jaws of Life.

All four were transported to hospital in stable but critical condition. The driver of the westbound semi was uninjured.

A collision analyst is investigating the scene. RCMP believe the unsafe passing attempt by the Corolla was a contributing factor. Highway 1 remains closed in both directions between Salmon Arm and Sicamous as of Saturday afternoon.

Officials expect the road to reopen by at least 5:00 p.m.

RCMP are asking anyone with dashcam footage or additional information to call 250-832-6044 and reference file 2026-3553.

.Salmon Arm Fire Department, BC Ambulance Service, Eagle Valley Rescue, and Salmon Arm Rescue Unit assisted at the scene.
