Tappen, BC - Quick action by local firefighters saved a woman from a smoke-filled home on Friday morning.

Upon arrival, firefighters found the house heavily filled with smoke and learned that a woman was trapped inside.

At approximately 10 a.m. on March 27, 2026, crews from the Tappen Sunnybrae Fire Department responded to reports of a fire inside a residence on Mikkelson Frontage Road in Tappen.

Upon arrival, firefighters found the house heavily filled with smoke and learned that a woman was trapped inside.

Supported by personnel from the Shuswap and White Lake fire departments, they entered the home, rapidly brought the blaze under control, confining it to a single room, and successfully rescued the woman.

Firefighters and members of the South Shuswap First Responders provided immediate first aid for smoke inhalation before handing her care over to BC Ambulance Service paramedics. She was then transported by helicopter to hospital.

Her current condition remains unknown.

Columbia Shuswap Regional District Deputy Regional Fire Chief Len Youden used the opportunity to remind residents of basic fire safety:

“We’d like to alert residents to the importance of having working smoke alarms in each bedroom and every floor of your home. Also, remember to conduct regular, monthly tests of these devices to make sure they are working properly.”

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. No other injuries were reported.
