Lightning-sparked wildfire confirmed near Kedleston Creek northeast of Vernon

August 24 2026 - A small wildfire burning in the Kedleston Creek area northeast of Vernon has been assessed as lightning-caused by the BC Wildfire Service.

Fire K41891, discovered Sunday, August 23, remains listed as out of control at just 0.009 hectares. It is located within the Kamloops Fire Centre, with no evacuation orders, alerts or area restrictions currently in place.

The suspected ignition aligns with a lightning storm that moved through the North Okanagan on Saturday evening, August 22.

That system produced dozens of strikes across the region. Local fire departments responded to multiple reports of ground strikes at the time, but no active fires were confirmed that night.

Saturday night: dozens of lightning flashes were detected over the North Okanagan.

The rugged, forested terrain in the area, steep slopes, dense tree cover and remote drainages, makes spotting a tiny fire especially difficult. Smoke from a small or smouldering ignition can easily be masked by the landscape or only become visible hours or days later, complicating initial searches after widespread lightning activity.
