October 29 2026 - A building on the UBC Okanagan campus in Kelowna was evacuated Thursday afternoon after smoke and flames were spotted at one of its entrances.

The Creative and Critical Studies building at 1148 Research Road was cleared after students reported that the power went out momentarily and was restored before the fire alarm sounded and the building was emptied.
Some students said flames and smoke were visible at the structure’s southern atrium entrance, with fire climbing the exterior wall. Watch Video
When Kelowna Fire Department crews arrived, they called a second alarm.

Two ladder trucks were set up on opposite sides of the building, with firefighters also working on the roof.
Crews knocked down the visible flames quickly and then turned their attention to any extension of the fire into the building’s walls.

The cause of the fire has not been released at this time. No injuries have been reported.
The incident began around 12:30 p.m.

University officials confirmed the evacuation and asked people to avoid the area until further notice.
