Crews busy paving Aberdeen Road

In an update presented to Council on October 26, staff reported that the sanitary main and service connections from Selkirk Drive to Wiseby (Whisbey) Drive are finished.

Crews are restoring the road to grade and preparing it for paving. Paving between Whisbey Drive and Rendell Drive is already complete, with the remaining sections scheduled for the first week of November.

Once paving is finished, work will continue with driveway and landscape restoration, line painting, and final cleanup.

The road is expected to reopen to through traffic around mid-November.

Aberdeen Road has been closed to through traffic since early February (following a winter pause), with only local access and emergency vehicles permitted. A signed pedestrian and bicycle corridor has been maintained along the west shoulder. Detours have primarily used Highway 6, Kalamalka Road, and Middleton Drive.

The project, awarded to Chapman Industries for $4,093,121.27 plus GST, also includes widening the road to create safer paved shoulders for pedestrians and cyclists. It is intended to support housing development in the area.

Timeline and delays

Work began in June 2025 near the Selkirk Drive intersection. The District reported that unexpected bedrock required specialized drilling equipment and slowed progress in the early phase. On July 24, 2025, a gas line on Aberdeen Road was struck during the work.

FortisBC responded and repaired the line the same day; the District closed portions of the road (Venables Drive to Middleton Drive) for local traffic only while the repair was completed, with the gas-related closure ending around 5 p.m.

After a winter shutdown, construction resumed in February 2026. Additional delays occurred at the CN Rail crossing, where poor soil conditions required an alternative drilling method, formal CN approval, and specialized equipment, according to District statements.

These issues pushed the project past the original target of an October 1, 2026 reopening; the District now lists overall completion in November 2026.

Mayor Ruth Hoyte has publicly referenced the project as part of her first-term record. She has publicly stated that the Aberdeen Road sewer will connect to the newest housing development (such as The Vine), increase the tax base, and provide reclaimed water for farmers.

Residents seeking information on connecting their properties to the new sewer can contact the Building Department or visit the District’s Infrastructure Services Building at 9903 Kalamalka Road.

Construction questions can be directed to Chapman Industries at 250-549-2907 (office) or 250-306-7881 (site supervisor).

Ongoing updates are posted on the District’s project webpage at https://www.coldstream.ca/district-projects.
