Vernon B.C. April 10, 2026 - Vernon North Okanagan RCMP is urging riders to keep electric dirt bikes off public roads and sidewalks after a sharp increase in illegal use sparked numerous safety complaints.

Electric dirt bikes, such as Sur-Ron and Talaria, are high-powered off-road machines designed for trails only.
Electric dirt bikes are not the same as legal e-bikes (motor-assisted cycles), which must have pedals, a limited motor (max 500W for standard or 250W for light e-bikes), and are restricted to 32 km/h or 25 km/h.
“These vehicles are often mistaken for e-bikes, but they are not e-bikes under B.C. law,” said Inspector Neil Kennedy. “When ridden on roads or sidewalks, they pose serious risks due to rapid acceleration and missing safety features like lights and mirrors.”
Police are especially concerned about inexperienced and underage riders, and parents buying these bikes without knowing the rules.
Riders caught breaking the law may face fines, vehicle seizure, criminal charges, or civil liability. Parents can also be held responsible.
“These bikes have a place, but that place is off road,” Kennedy added.
