Coquihalla Closed again , Vehicle Incident

The Mountain Highway is Closed in Both Directions, Challenging Week for BC Drivers

Vernon, B.C., Thursday, Dec. 18, 2025 – 5:49 p.m. PST - The Coquihalla Highway (Highway 5) remains closed in both directions Thursday afternoon following a vehicle incident between Hope and Merritt, adding to a challenging week for drivers navigating B.C.’s storm-battered roads.

Emergency crews are on scene, and motorists are being advised to expect delays.

Southbound traffic is being detoured via Highway 1, with no alternative detours available through Highway 8 or Coldwater Road. Authorities estimate the highway may reopen by 8:00 p.m. PST.

Environment Canada reports difficult driving conditions across the region. Snow continues to fall along the Hope-to-Merritt section, with accumulations expected to reach 10 to 15 cm overnight.

Winds are gusting up to 80 km/h in places, raising the risk of local blowing snow. Snow levels are currently near valley bottoms, and conditions are expected to remain windy through Friday.

Northbound between Merritt and Kamloops, drivers are also contending with snowfall, gusty winds, and local blowing snow.

About 5 cm of snow is expected overnight, with southwest winds gusting up to 70 km/h early this evening. Conditions are forecast to improve slightly Friday with periods of sun, though gusty winds will persist.

Drivers planning to travel the Coquihalla are urged to check current road conditions and allow extra time for trips.

The recent heavy rain, wind, and snow events have made winter driving particularly difficult across southern B.C., with multiple highway closures and detours reported this week.
