UPDATE: Bruhn Bridge Project in Sicamous Remains on Schedule as Holiday Travel Approaches

Sicamous, B.C. December 9, 2025 - Construction on the replacement of the R.W. Bruhn Bridge continues to move ahead on schedule, with no major delays reported as the project enters its second full year of work.

No closures for holiday season

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure has released its latest three-week look-ahead schedule, confirming that no road closures are planned between December 20, 2025 and January 4, 2026, welcome news for holiday travellers along Highway 1.

Construction Progress: Still on Target for 2027 Completion

The multi-year highway upgrade — which includes 1.9 kilometres of four-laning, new intersections, and the construction of a new four-lane bridge — remains on track for completion in late 2027, consistent with the timeline announced at the start of the project.

Current work includes:

  • Pile driving for the new bridge foundations

  • Installation of in-water trestles

  • Rock drilling and blasting above Old Sicamous Road and Old Spallumcheen Road

  • Ongoing material hauling, with frequent truck traffic in the area

Reduced speed limits introduced in August 2024 remain in effect 24/7 and will continue into 2026.

December Traffic Impacts

While closures resume this week, they ease significantly heading into the holiday period.

December 6–20:

  • Daytime full closures continue most weekdays between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

  • Single-lane alternating traffic (SLAT) occurs overnight in several early-morning windows.

Local traffic to Old Sicamous Road and Old Spallumcheen Road is allowed on the hour during full closures. All schedules remain subject to weather.

December 20–January 4:

  • No closures are planned, and Highway 1 will remain fully open aside from the reduced speed zone.

Pedestrian Access Changes

The walkway beneath the existing bridge leading to Sicamous Beach Park remains closed 24/7, with park access temporarily rerouted to Silver Sands Road.

The sidewalk on the existing Bruhn Bridge is also closed, and pedestrians must use a shuttle service to cross.

What the New Bridge Will Offer

Once complete, the replacement structure will:

  • Provide four full vehicle lanes, improving capacity and reducing congestion

  • Include safer routes for pedestrians and cyclists

  • Improve access points to Highway 97A/B and local roads

  • Enhance safety along a corridor that has seen serious incidents in recent years

The original 1960s-era Bruhn Bridge will be removed later in the construction timeline, once new bridge spans and approaches are in place. Demolition is anticipated during the mid-to-late stages of the project, though the ministry has not yet released a firm date.

Looking Ahead

With no significant schedule changes announced since the project began, motorists can expect continued lane reductions, intermittent closures, and speed restrictions through 2026 and into 2027 as the $260.5-million upgrade progresses.

Drivers are encouraged to check DriveBC for daily traffic and closure updates.
