Youth on non-street-legal e-bike hits car in Vernon

September 3, 2026 - A youth was unhurt Tuesday morning after an e-bike collided with a passenger vehicle in Vernon, police say.

Vernon North Okanagan RCMP responded at about 10:25 a.m. on September 1 to a crash at 39th Avenue and 25th Street.

Police say the youth was riding a non-street-legal e-bike, failed to stop at a stop sign, and struck an eastbound passenger vehicle.

Officers say both were travelling at relatively low speed. The youth was not injured.

The e-bike was badly damaged and could not be ridden. The car had minor damage.

Police say the youth faces several Motor Vehicle Act licensing and driving offences, which they say could affect a future driver’s licence.

RCMP are reminding parents that not all e-bikes are the same. Power and design put them in different legal categories. Police say some e-dirt bikes have licensing rules similar to motorcycles.

Police encourage families to check B.C.’s Motor Vehicle Act rules before buying an e-bike or letting a young person ride one.
