The Sidewinder Trail in Kalamalka Lake Park has been temporarily closed after crews clearing brush and other potential wildfire fuel sources came across what is likely an unexploded mortar shell just off the trail early Thursday morning (February 8. 2024).

The trail is closed until the device can be safely dealt with.

“The area historically had been a training area for the military and used as a firing range for mortars and other ordnance,”

Const. Chris Terleski, media relations officer for the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP.

The area was used for war games by the Vernon Military camp by WW2 soldiers training to head overseas.

This is not the first time such a device has been discovered in Kalamalka Park.

Most events end safely but that's not always the case.

The Vancouver Sun recounted the story of a group of Boy Scouts who came across an unexploded military ordinance in 1963 with fatal and life-changing consequences.
