Highly Visible Slash Pile Burn Prompts District of Coldstream Public Notice
December 17 2025 - A highly visible slash pile burn at Coldstream Ranch has drawn widespread attention across Coldstream and Lavington, with smoke and flames visible from multiple vantage points throughout the area.
The activity reportedly generated a high volume of calls to emergency services, prompting the District of Coldstream to take the unusual step of issuing a public reassurance on social media that officials were aware of the fire.
In a post to its official Facebook page, the District stated it is aware of the controlled burn at Coldstream Ranch, thanked residents for their vigilance, and invited anyone with questions to contact the District’s Protective Services Manager.
According to information available, Lavington Fire Hall and Coldstream Fire Hall both responded to initial reports of a fire there earlier in the day. Bylaw services are also believed to have attended the scene. No injuries or property damage have been reported.
Throughout much of the day, five or six sizable slash piles have been burning vigorously.
The piles appear to be located in an open field, well away from buildings and standing trees.
From some viewing angles, however, the height of the flames and rising smoke can give the impression that nearby trees are burning, which does not appear to be the case.
The burn has been especially visible to residents in Lavington and to drivers travelling along Highway 6, where flames and smoke can be seen from the roadway.
This time of year falls within Coldstream’s designated open burning season, which typically runs from November 1 to April 30. During this period, slash burning is permitted provided the appropriate approvals and conditions are met through the District of Coldstream and, where required, provincial authorities.
The District has not released further details about the burn, but its public notice indicates municipal officials are aware of the activity and monitoring the situation.
Residents with questions or concerns are encouraged to contact the District of Coldstream directly.
