Boating Season Just Around the Corner. VSAR Offers Tips for a Safe Summer on the Water
April 13 2026 - With warmer weather on the horizon and boating season fast approaching, the Vernon Search and Rescue Group Society (VSAR) is reminding boaters to prioritize safety before heading out on the water.

The VSAR boat team recently returned to the water for training, splitting into two groups to practice night operations, navigation, crew management, FLIR use, and shoreline searches with subject pickups.
The team was excited to be back on the boats. Vernon Search and Rescue says now is a great time to check your safety gear before getting back on the water.
The group outlined essential items that all boats generally require for safe operation:
One approved life jacket per person
A buoyant line to rescue persons overboard and secure the vessel
A watertight flashlight
A sound signaling device, such as a whistle
A fire extinguisher (if the boat has a gas engine or cooking devices)
An anchor with rope or chain
A bailer or bilge pump to remove water
Boaters should also carry navigation equipment, such as a phone, and all operators are required to have their Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC).
In case of an emergency, always call 911.
