Excessive Speeder Caught After High-Speed Collision. Further investigation revealed that the driver was prohibited from driving under the Motor Vehicle Act.
On July 9, 2024, around 5:00 am, BC Highway Patrol in Kelowna observed a grey 4-door hatchback speeding at over 105 kph in a 60 kph zone on Hwy 97, William Bennett Bridge.
Before officers could initiate a traffic stop, the vehicle lost control, struck both the center and right-side medians, and rolled onto its roof. Fortunately, the driver, who was the only occupant, did not suffer life-threatening injuries.
Further investigation revealed that the driver was prohibited from driving under the Motor Vehicle Act.
This incident underscores the importance of adhering to speed limits, which are set for ideal driving conditions. Speeding reduces reaction time, increases stopping distance, and significantly raises the risk of severe collisions.
BC Highway Patrol will continue regular speed enforcement across the Okanagan to save lives and reduce injuries.
Inspector Rob Nason reminds motorists that speeding is the leading cause of vehicle collision fatalities in British Columbia, and urges everyone to obey posted speed limits, as deaths from high-speed collisions are entirely preventable.
