Vernon Tractor Fire Threatens Nearby Homes

July 8 2026 - A farm tractor erupted in flames Wednesday evening along Pottery Road near Francis Road, sending a massive plume of black smoke into the sky and prompting multiple 911 calls as dispatchers initially feared several separate fires.

Just after 5 p.m. on July 8, crews from BX Swan Lake Fire and Vernon Fire Rescue raced to the scene near the boundary of both districts. Fire apparatus from both departments responded to the blaze.

Witnesses reported the tractor was moving equipment along the road when it caught fire.

Soon after the fire began an explosion-like sound, believed to be tires bursting from the intense heat, was heard.

Flames quickly consumed the machine and began spreading into the dry roadside grass, raising immediate concerns for two nearby residences.

Firefighters split their efforts: some attacked the burning tractor directly while others doused the spreading grass fire to keep it from reaching the homes.

The fire was brought under control with no injuries reported and no structures damaged.No cause has been determined.

Pottery Road was reduced to one lane while the wrecked tractor was prepared for towing.
