Vernon to add traffic signal at Highway 6 and Pottery Road
September 12 2026 - Vernon city council has approved a signalized intersection at Highway 6 and Pottery Road as part of the Kal Lake Road multi-use path project.
The decision will come as welcome news to many who use the intersection.
Council voted on September 8 to expand Project 2026-02 so it includes a signal at Highway 6 and Pottery Road.
City staff say the intersection is uncontrolled and difficult for vehicles and pedestrians. The aim is to improve safety and connectivity between East Hill and the Kal Lake Road corridor.
Vernon has approved the $6.9 million scope and funding plan. The City and the Ministry of Transportation and Transit have a letter of intent and are still completing ministry approvals. Construction is aimed at 2027.
About $4.98 million would come from grants: $3 million from the Strategic Priorities Fund, $1.7 million from the Growing Communities Fund, and $280,000 from the Build Communities Strong Fund. The remaining $1.92 million would come from city reserves, including $1.64 million from the Infrastructure Reserve and $280,000 from sewer reserves.
Staff say work could begin as early as fall 2026, but spring 2027 is more likely, with completion targeted for fall 2027.
People who use the corner daily say drivers and pedestrians now try to get across busy Highway 6 at Pottery with no signal, against fast highway traffic.
ICBC recorded 48 reported crashes at Highway 6 and Pottery Road and its turning lane from 2021 to 2025.
