Coldstream Sees Sharp 33.72% Crime Surge, While Spallumcheen Reports 19.29% Drop: Vernon RCMP’s Q3 Crime Trends
The Vernon North Okanagan RCMP’s third-quarter policing report for 2024, covering July to September, provides an in-depth look at crime trends and policing efforts across the region.
The area includes Vernon, Coldstream, Armstrong, Enderby, Lumby, Spallumcheen, Falkland, and Westside on the western shores of Okanagan Lake.
Key Crime Trends
Decreases in Crime
Spallumcheen saw a notable 19.29% drop in calls for service compared to the same period in 2023, highlighting improved community safety.
Vernon Rural experienced an 11.02% decline in calls for service, accompanied by a 24.77% drop in Criminal Code offences.
Enderby saw an 11.76% reduction in violent offences, contributing to a safer environment for residents.
Increases in Crime
Coldstream reported a 33.72% increase in Criminal Code offences, with property crime surging by 59.45%.
Enderby experienced a 17.48% rise in overall calls for service, suggesting growing challenges in this area.
The Westside region, often frequented by tourists and cottage-goers, recorded a 42.85% increase in violent offences, raising concerns about safety in this scenic locale.
Crime Prevention and Policing Successes
Targeted Policing
Officers dismantled a drug trafficking operation using seasonal rental properties in the area. This operation resulted in the arrest of four individuals and the seizure of significant quantities of fentanyl, cocaine, methamphetamine, and prescription pills.
Prolific Offender Monitoring
The RCMP tracked 13 prolific offenders, nine of whom are currently in custody. This initiative continues to reduce criminal activity by closely monitoring high-risk individuals.
Downtown Enforcement
The Downtown Enforcement Unit arrested 34 individuals on outstanding warrants and recommended charges for six investigations, addressing issues like failure to comply with release conditions and driving while prohibited.
Road and Waterway Safety
RCMP officers issued numerous traffic warnings and violation tickets, targeting speeding, distracted driving, and other traffic offences. In the Westside area, traffic contacts increased by a staggering 635.71%, reflecting intensified enforcement efforts in this lakeside region.
On the waterways, RCMP ensured compliance with boating regulations during the busy summer season, emphasizing public safety for locals and visitors.
Community Engagement and Mental Health Support
The Integrated Crisis Response Team (ICRT) responded to 230 calls involving individuals in crisis, marking a 46.34% increase compared to the previous year. The team’s collaborative approach with health professionals is instrumental in managing mental health crises.
