British Columbia facing roughly 140 active wildfires as conditions remain challenging

July 28 2026 - As of July 28, 2026, British Columbia is dealing with a constantly shifting wildfire landscape, with approximately 140 fires currently burning across the province.

According to the BC Wildfire Service dashboard, there are 139 active wildfires. Of those, 51 remain out of control, 38 are being held, and 50 are under control.

Four of the blazes have been designated Wildfires of Note due to their size, behaviour, or impact on communities.

The largest of these, the Pear Lake fire in the Cariboo Fire Centre, has grown to more than 66,800 hectares.

Together with the Ainslie Creek fire (nearly 18,000 hectares), the Brunswick Creek fire (about 7,400 hectares), and the much smaller Tower Creek 2 fire (250 hectares), these four incidents alone account for over 92,500 hectares.

The total area burned by all active fires across the province is higher still.

Evacuation measures remain in place in several regions. Officials are currently reporting 32 evacuation orders and 29 evacuation alerts, affecting communities primarily in the Cariboo, Coastal, and Southeast fire centres.

Hot, dry and windy conditions are expected to continue in southeastern B.C., keeping the fire situation fluid.

Crews, supported by additional personnel arriving from other provinces and Mexico, continue to respond to new starts while working to contain existing fires.
