Vernon House Fire Sends Thick Smoke Plume Skyward as Helicopters Divert from Wildfire

Fire crews still on scene 12 hours later

The modern style white and glass home was fully involved, with heavy smoke rising through the surrounding forest and water streams visible as firefighters attacked the flames.

August 9 2026 - A large modern home in Vernon’s Beverly Hills Estate area erupted in flames Saturday afternoon, sending a towering column of thick black smoke hundreds of feet into the sky and drawing onlookers to the hillside neighbourhood.

The fire, reported around 5:15 p.m. near Bench Row Road / Sunset Boulevard, quickly fully engulfed the multi-level structure. Flames poured from the roof and upper levels while dense smoke billowed across the city.

Vernon Fire Rescue Services responded immediately, with BC Wildfire Service helicopters, including at least one diverted from the Bradley Creek wildfire complex across Okanagan Lake, making several water drops on the blaze.

Crews brought the bulk of the fire under control by early evening, but Vernon Fire Rescue remained on scene well into the following day, presumably for fire watch.

The home sits adjacent to a large stretch of dense forest that runs down toward Truman Dagnus Locheed Park on Okanagan Lake, raising concerns about possible spread in the current dry conditions.

While firefighters handled the working structure fire, Vernon Fire Rescue requested mutual aid from BX Swan Lake Fire Department to cover other calls in the city.

No injuries have been reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
