Vernon firefighters rescue stranded hiker in high-angle operation

July 30 2026 - Vernon Fire Rescue Services (VFRS) Technical Rescue Team members successfully extricated a stranded hiker from a steep cliff face on Wednesday afternoon.

Steep Cliffs define the Canadian Lakeview Estates area.

The call came in around 4:35 p.m. on July 29 in the Canadian Lakeview Estates area. The individual had become stuck after entering terrain that could not be safely navigated on foot.

VFRS crews, including the Technical Rescue Team that specializes in high- and low-angle incidents within the city, responded quickly. Firefighters secured rope lines and used specialized rope-rescue equipment, preparing a rescue basket in case it was needed as part of the operation.

The hiker was brought safely back to solid ground with no reported injuries.

VFRS reminded residents that as outdoor recreation grows in the region, people should plan ahead: know the route, check terrain and weather, carry proper gear, and always tell someone where they are going and when they expect to return.
