UPDATE: Official details released on Sunset Boulevard house fire as public thanks pour in for firefighters

August 10 2026 - Vernon officials have provided further details on Saturday’s house fire in the 100-block of Sunset Boulevard that destroyed a home in the Beverly Hills Estate.
Vernon Fire Rescue responded shortly after 5 p.m. on August 8 to reports of a structure fire. Crews from all three Vernon stations arrived to find the home fully involved. Due to the property’s location next to a wildland interface area, BC Wildfire Service supported the response with ground crews and aerial resources.
Firefighters operated defensively to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading into the surrounding forest. The fire was knocked down that evening.
Crews remained on scene overnight and into Sunday morning to monitor flare-ups and extinguish hotspots. Smoke continued to be visible in the area.
According to Vernon Fire Rescue Services, firefighters from the Kelowna and Kamloops fire departments provided mutual aid by staffing Vernon fire halls. This allowed local crews to focus on the Sunset Boulevard fire while maintaining emergency response coverage across the city. The mutual-aid crews also responded to other calls in Vernon throughout the evening.
The City of Vernon thanked BC Wildfire Service and the neighbouring departments in Kelowna and Kamloops for their support.
The home was a total loss.
On Sunday afternoon an excavator began demolishing the remaining structure for safety reasons while crews continued to address residual hotspots.
The official posts generated a strong wave of public appreciation on Facebook, with more than 50 comments thanking the firefighters.
Residents praised the crews for their fast response, successful containment of the fire, and protection of the surrounding hillside neighbourhood, with many calling them heroes.
