Beavers vs. BC Hydro: Okanagan Rail Trail users may have noticed tree removal today
Some industrious beavers have been hard at work along the Rail Trail just south of the Kekuli Bay boat launch, felling trees.
In response to safety concerns, BC Hydro crews removed beaver-damaged trees along the trail earlier today. While disruptions were minimal, a flagging crew was on-site to ensure safe passage for trail users.
Beavers, Canada’s national symbol (yes, they still hold that title!), are well known for their exceptional woodworking skills. Unfortunately, their penchant for felling trees can sometimes create hazards for public spaces.
According to wildlife experts, a single beaver can bring down hundreds of trees in its lifetime, with some estimates suggesting that beaver activity contributes to the loss of thousands of trees annually in Canada.
While these furry engineers play an essential role in shaping ecosystems, their efforts occasionally clash with human infrastructure.
The Okanagan Rail Trail, a popular route for cyclists, runners, and walkers, sees thousands of users each month, particularly during peak seasons.
We doubt the beavers are thrilled about the intervention.
