"Suspicious Device" Forces Closure of Vernon's Justice Park, Bomb Squad Enroute

UPDATE: Justice Park has reopened. The Explosive Device Unit has removed the suspicious device safely, police tape surrounding the park is gone, and so is the RCMP who were keeping watch at the park.

Original Story, June 12, 7 PM: The discovery of a "suspicious device" has prompted Vernon North RCMP to request assistance from the RCMP Explosive Disposal Unit (EDU).

The discovery was made mid-afternoon Monday.

Justice Park was secured with yellow police tape and several RCMP officers until the Bomb Squad arrives.

The EDU must travel from the lower mainland to Vernon in their specialized vehicles.

It's not known if the unit will attempt to evaluate the device when they arrive or wait til the first light Tuesday.

Until then RCMP is asking the public to avoid the area.

Justice Park is located on the Northwest Corner of 27th Street and 30th Avenue.

The Park is in the busy downtown area of Vernon, across the street from the Vernon Provincial Courthouse.
