Fine Particle Pollution Peaks at 604 Micrograms per Cubic Metre, that's very bad

August 11 2026 - Vernon and Coldstream residents experienced one of the worst air quality nights of the summer on Monday, August 10, when fine particulate matter (PM2.5) at the Vernon Science Centre surged to a peak of 603.8 µg/m³ around 10 p.m.
Levels stayed deep in the Hazardous range overnight before slowly easing Tuesday morning.
The reading is more than 24 times British Columbia’s 24-hour air quality objective of 25 µg/m³.
Over the past two months, air quality in the Vernon area has been repeatedly affected by a series of major wildfires across southern British Columbia.
Here is the timeline of those fires alongside the highest hourly readings recorded at the Vernon Science Centre during each period:
Early to mid-July: While the Boston Bar Complex (Brunswick Creek, Ainslie Creek and Anderson Creek fires) was active in the Fraser Canyon, Vernon PM2.5 levels were elevated but generally stayed below 80 µg/m³.
Mid-to-late July: During the period when the Big Bar Complex (including the Pear Lake fire near Clinton) was growing rapidly, Vernon recorded its highest readings of this stretch on July 31, when PM2.5 climbed as high as 185.6 µg/m³.
August 1 onward: As the Bradley Creek fire (about 10 km northwest of Vernon near the Okanagan Indian Band) and the Quilpituk Creek fire (south of La Casa) burned on the west side of Okanagan Lake, Vernon saw a short spike of 102.7 µg/m³ on the afternoon of August 2, with levels frequently in the 50–100 µg/m³ range in the following days.
August 7 onward: While the Bald Range fire near Summerland was growing explosively, Vernon recorded the extreme overnight peak of 603.8 µg/m³ on August 10.
The timing of the record spike coincides with the rapid expansion of the Bald Range fire.
However, residual smoke from the much closer Bradley Creek and Quilpituk Creek fires, along with broader regional haze, may also have contributed.
Levels this high pose serious health risks for everyone, particularly children, seniors, and people with heart or lung conditions.
To put the 603.8 µg/m³ peak into perspective: that single-hour reading was roughly six times higher than Delhi’s recent annual average, about 20 times higher than Beijing’s, and more than 50 times higher than levels typically seen in Los Angeles.
In other words, for a short time Vernon’s air was dramatically worse than some of the world’s more polluted major cities.
