November 1, 2024: Slippery Conditions and Low Visibility on Coquihalla Highway as Snow Continues


This morning, November 1, drivers are facing challenging conditions on the Coquihalla Highway (Highway 5) between Kamloops and the Great Bear Snowshed, with slippery sections, low visibility, and a variable speed corridor in effect. While the special weather statement has ended, snowfall and dangerous driving conditions continue to impact the area.



As of 8 a.m., the Coquihalla Summit Weather Station reported a temperature of -1.5°C, with a road temperature just below freezing at -0.8°C. Snow accumulation has been steady, with 1 cm since 6 a.m., adding to a total ground accumulation of 6 cm.


Winds are blowing from the southeast at an average of 9.4 km/h, with gusts up to 15.4 km/h, contributing to decreased visibility.



The forecast predicts ongoing snowfall today, with totals between 5 to 10 cm expected by tonight, and another 5 cm possible overnight.


Drivers are advised to proceed with caution and prepare for winter driving conditions as minor accidents have already been reported.
