VERNON, B.C.: If you've spotted uniformed officers in green alongside German Shepherds roaming your neighbourhood trails or parks lately, don’t worry, it’s all part of regular RCMP police dog training.
The Vernon North Okanagan RCMP wants to remind residents that these canine training exercises are essential for preparing police dogs and their handlers for real-life policing situations.

“They train where they work,” says Const. Chris Terleski, RCMP Media Relations. “That means neighbourhoods, alleys, even backyards – anywhere real incidents can happen.”
While the presence of officers and their four-legged partners might surprise some, the RCMP emphasizes they do their best to avoid areas where pets are out or people are gathered.
Dog handlers wear distinct green uniforms marked “POLICE” on the front and back, different from regular RCMP attire. RCMP police dogs — like PSD Norse, featured in the latest update — are trained in tracking, searching for evidence, and apprehending suspects.
These dogs aren’t just working hard; they’re continuing a legacy nearly 90 years strong. 🐾
A Proud History in B.C.
Police dogs have served British Columbians since 1935 when the RCMP formalized the Police Dog Section with three German Shepherds: Black Lux, Dale, and Sultan.
Though even earlier, as far back as 1908, officers were known to use their own dogs for tracking fugitives.
Today, the RCMP's canine program includes more than 150 teams nationwide, supported by a dedicated breeding and training facility in Alberta.
In B.C., specialized units like the Lower Mainland’s Integrated Police Dog Service showcase the evolving role of these trusted partners.
So next time you see them in your neighbourhood, give them space, but maybe a smile too.
They’re out there training hard.
