RCMP Issues Road Safety Reminder as Summer Activity Increases

With good weather, more of us are out and about

With warmer temperatures and longer days drawing more people outdoors, North Okanagan roads are seeing a surge in traffic. That increased activity comes with greater risk—and the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP has issued a timely reminder to help keep everyone safe.

Sunny Weather Means More Interactions Between People and Vehicles

In a public safety message released this week, Constable Chris Terleski emphasizes that road safety is a shared responsibility. Whether you're behind the wheel, on foot, or riding a bike or scooter, staying alert and following the rules can prevent serious incidents.

What Happened

RCMP officers are seeing more people walking, cycling, and riding scooters across the region, leading to busier roads and a higher potential for collisions. To prevent injuries or worse, they’ve issued some simple but important reminders:

For Drivers:

  • Don’t drive under the influence

  • Check blind spots before changing lanes

  • Slow down in residential, school, and park zones

  • Give space to cyclists, pedestrians, and scooter riders

For Cyclists & Scooter Riders:

  • Obey traffic laws and signals

  • Always wear a helmet

  • Use lights and reflective gear

  • Ride predictably and signal your turns

For Pedestrians:

  • Cross at marked crosswalks

  • Make eye contact with drivers

  • Stay off your phone and wear visible clothing at night

Why It Matters

“With the surge in outdoor activity, our roads get really busy here in the North Okanagan,” says Cst. Terleski. “Make good choices, look out for one another, and together we can make sure everyone gets to where they are going safely this summer.”
