May 18 2026 - The Okanagan Science Centre remains closed today, Victoria Day Monday, following a suspicious fire discovered at the rear of the building.
Last Thursday, Vernon firefighters responded quickly and knocked down a fire at the rear of the building, limiting damage to a small entry alcove and door area.
However, thick smoke entered the building. While damage was being assessed staff have suspended operations.
Steel fencing has been erected around the area damaged by fire. On the fence, a sign that reads “Caution – Keep Out”.
The front entrance is blocked with orange tape and a notice reading: “Closed due to a small fire. Thanks for your patience.”
It is not yet known when the centre will reopen or whether the upcoming Mindblown Festival events will proceed as planned.
The festival was scheduled to feature:
May 21 – BRAINIUM: an interactive, expo-style science event open to teachers, students, and the public (free, 9:00am–4:00pm).
May 22 – BLOOMIN’ BINGO, with plant prizes sponsored by Okanagan Restoration Services.
May 23 – Bob the Fossil Guy, offering hands-on fossil displays and stories.
More information is expected to be posted on the centre’s website at okscience.ca.
