May 9 2026 - Crews from the Armstrong-Spallumcheen Fire Department responded to several grass fires along Highway 97 between Old Kamloops Road and O’Keefe’s Ranch late Saturday morning, May 9, 2026.
Witnesses reported seeing at least three separate blazes burning on the same side of the highway within a short stretch of roughly two kilometres. Two grass fire were near each other the third was over a kilometre away.
Fire crews quickly extinguished the small fires.
No official cause has been released. The fact that the fires were reported nearly simultaneously in such close proximity is unusual.
This is a good reminder that fire season is now underway in the Interior. Even small sparks from vehicles, cigarettes, or equipment can ignite dry grass during this time of year.
Extra caution is urged when travelling or working outdoors.
