Missing Snowmobilers Located in Hunters Range

December 13 2025 - Two snowmobilers reported missing in the Hunters Range since Wednesday have been located, according to Central Okanagan Search and Rescue (COSAR).

The pair were found deep in a ravine just after 2 p.m. Thursday, and search teams immediately began planning a technical extrication. No word yet on the details of that operation.

The incident occurred within Vernon Search and Rescue’s response area, with COSAR assisting alongside Shuswap Search and Rescue and members of the Hunters Range, Lumby, and Silver Star snowmobile clubs. One local club was deployed into high-risk terrain under SAR command, and their backcountry knowledge proved key to locating the snowmobilers.

While COSAR has responded to only one snowmobile-related search in its own region so far this winter season, the organization says the incident highlights how quickly conditions can change across Interior backcountry terrain.

Search and rescue teams are reminding outdoor users that help should be called early. Anyone who is overdue, injured, lost, or concerned is urged to call 911 immediately. In B.C., ground search and rescue is provided free of charge by trained volunteers.

SAR also advises riders and other backcountry users to file a trip plan, carry satellite communication devices due to limited cell coverage, travel with appropriate avalanche safety gear, and check Avalanche Canada forecasts before heading out.
