Vernon, BC - A recreational U18 minor hockey game descended into chaos on Sunday, December 21, 2025, when a bench-clearing brawl broke out at Kal Tire Place in Vernon, British Columbia.
The matchup pitted the Greater Vernon Minor Hockey Association (GVMHA)Â Recreation Two team against the Salmon Arm Minor Hockey Association (SAMHA)Â Recreation One team. Salmon Arm emerged victorious with a 9-5 score, but the contest ended on a sour note as multiple players from both sides cleared their benches and engaged in physical altercations on the ice toward the game's conclusion.
There are allegations that some adults, possibly including coaches from both teams, joined the fray on the ice, with the official game stat sheet reportedly reflecting abusive behavior penalties issued to the coaches.
The incident was captured on video, which quickly circulated online and drew widespread attention.
In response, both GVMHAÂ and SAMHAÂ issued nearly identical public statements on social media shortly after the game, strongly condemning the behavior.
They emphasized that such actions are not tolerated and reaffirmed their commitment to the safety, respect, and well-being of players, officials, volunteers, and families as top priorities.
The associations announced they were collaborating closely with the Okanagan Mainline Amateur Hockey Association (OMAHA), the governing body for the league, along with other relevant parties to conduct a thorough review and investigation, while protecting those uninvolved.
No police involvement was reported, with Vernon RCMP confirming no record of officers being called to the arena.
By January 9, 2026, OMAHA had reviewed available video evidence and applied BC Hockey conduct and discipline guidelines to issue numerous suspensions (referred to as "appropriate sanctions") to players and coaches involved.
The matter was handled privately, with notifications sent directly to the individuals and associations; no public details on names, lengths, or specifics were disclosed.
