Lower Mainland Travel Chaos as Wildfires Shut Down Two Major Routes

July 22, 2026 - Drivers heading east from the Lower Mainland face major disruptions after wildfires forced the closure of two key highways.

Highway 1 remains closed between Hells Gate and Boston Bar, and Highway 3 is shut from Sunshine Valley to Manning Park due to the aggressive Brunswick Complex fire south of Boston Bar, which has triggered evacuation orders.

The Coquihalla Highway (Highway 5) is open with traffic flowing normally and serves as the main route to the Interior.

However, a separate wildfire near Carolin Mine Road visible from the Coq sits at 40–45 hectares. It has shown little growth in recent days and does not currently threaten the highway.

A slower alternative exists via Highway 99 through Pemberton and Lillooet (Duffey Lake Road).

This narrower, winding route is open but typically adds 1.5 to 3 hours to the journey.

Hot and dry conditions are expected across the region in the coming days, raising fire concerns.
