Specialized Line Technicians Replace Insulators on Transmission Tower South of Enderby

ENDERBY B.C. - Specialized line technicians were observed Saturday working on a high-voltage transmission tower just south of Enderby.

Helicopters provided essential support, using long lines to hoist the new insulator string up to the tower.

The crew, working on the roughly 40-45 metre (130-150 foot) tall steel lattice tower, was replacing a string of suspension insulators.

These technicians are not standard distribution linemen. They are part of specialized transmission maintenance teams trained and certified for live-line work on high-voltage systems.

The task requires precise coordination to complete safely while the line remains energized.

Helicopters provided essential support, using long lines to hoist the new insulator string up to the tower. Highly skilled long-line pilots are employed to maintain precise hover positions and carefully maneuver the heavy insulators.

Ground crews assisted with equipment staging and logistics on the ground.

BC Hydro conducts this type of helicopter-assisted maintenance periodically on its 138 kV or 230 kV transmission lines to maintain grid reliability, particularly in areas with difficult access.

How do crews get to the top of the tower? Locals reported that they were lifted to the top of the tower by helicopter.
