August 21 2026 - If you travel past the Highway 97 / 97A exchange north of Swan Lake, or along L&A Cross Road, you may have noticed heavy equipment at work and asked yourself what those machines are doing and what they are building.
Here’s the answer. Construction of the North Okanagan Wastewater Recovery Project is now underway in the Township of Spallumcheen.

The long-planned project is a partnership between the Regional District of North Okanagan, the Township of Spallumcheen, and the Okanagan Indian Band.
Work on the Township’s portion began in July 2026 after the project received its Municipal Wastewater Regulation permit from the Province of British Columbia.
Centerfire Contracting Ltd. has been awarded the contract, which includes wastewater collection lines, lift stations, and the treatment and storage ponds at the site on L&A Cross Road.

Site grading and pipework will continue through 2026, with construction of the reclaimed water storage ponds scheduled for 2027.
Commissioning is expected in the fall of 2027, and the system is anticipated to be fully operating by early 2028.
Once complete, the facility will use partial-mix aerated lagoons followed by disinfection to produce reclaimed water suitable for irrigating forage crops such as silage corn and alfalfa on nearby agricultural land.
Biosolids generated by the process will be handled by a licensed local operator.
The project is designed to protect water quality in Swan Lake by replacing aging septic systems, provide a reliable source of irrigation water for local agriculture, and support sustainable economic development in the area.
