VSAR and RCAF 442 Rescue Squadron Come to the Rescue
February 28 2026 - A stranded snowmobiler was safely rescued after becoming separated from his group in the backcountry near Vernon.

Vernon Search And Rescue Group Society says crews were tasked late Friday night after the rider damaged his machine and became stuck in a deep drainage, unable to climb back out and rejoin his friends.
Vernon SAR deployed its Snowmobile Team into the search area, working alongside an operator from the Hunters Range Snowmobile Association.
With newer snow and recent wind loading creating concern for avalanches on low slopes and in treed areas, the team connected with an Avalanche Safety Officer from Revelstoke Search and Rescue to provide oversight in the search area.
With avalanche terrain posing a serious concern, crews initially attempted to coordinate a helicopter rescue with North Shore Search And Rescue.
Ultimately, assistance was provided by RCAF 442 Rescue Squadron, which was returning from a similar call near Quesnel.
Search officials are reminding outdoor enthusiasts that avalanche conditions can change rapidly this time of year due to warming temperatures, new snow and wind loading.
Riders heading into the backcountry are reminded to carry essential safety equipment, ensure they are trained in its use, and always leave a detailed trip plan.
“Search and Rescue cannot always swoop in for an immediate rescue,” the group noted, adding that weather, terrain and hazard conditions can delay response times.
As always, preparation is key, carry emergency supplies, extra layers, food and water, and be prepared to shelter in place if necessary.
