As of Sunday afternoon, the wildfire in Ellison Provincial Park has been classified as "under control."
911 operators began receiving reports there was a column of white smoke emanating from an unspecified area in Ellison Park shortly before 1 PM on Sunday.
Upon reaching the park's campground, firefighters discovered the blaze near the washroom area. It was rapidly spreading.
As a safety measure, Eastside Road was blocked off.
Some campers evacuated the area, others did their best to slow the fire's progress while firefighters were en route.
Vernon Fire/Rescue, along with neighboring fire halls and BC Wildfire Service, joined forces to combat the fire.
A BC Wildfire spotter plane guided a helicopter, which dropped buckets of water on the fire. Additionally, a water bomber circled the area, although it did not release retardant onto the fire.
Within approximately two hours, the Ellison Provincial Park fire was successfully brought under control and contained.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
