The dramatic video, released by the BC Highway Patrol and posted on RCMPTV’s YouTube channel, shows the incident unfolding on Highway 1 westbound near East 1st Avenue in Vancouver on the morning of June 18, 2026.

According to the RCMP, a BC Highway Patrol officer was stuck in heavy traffic when a black Harley-Davidson sped past on the right shoulder. When the officer activated his emergency lights and siren, a blue pickup truck properly moved to the right to yield. The motorcyclist, however, continued racing along the shoulder, struck a road sign, and slammed into the rear of the pickup.

“Passing on the right enrages other motorists, but that’s not the main reason that it’s illegal,” said Corporal Michael McLaughlin of the BC Highway Patrol. “The side of the road has rocks, sand, garbage, shredded truck tires and other hazards, and if someone pulls off the road suddenly, you could end up badly hurt or worse.”The 37-year-old rider was briefly arrested for flight from police.

He was issued two violation tickets , $109 for passing on the right off the roadway and $196 for driving without due care and attention, and his motorcycle was impounded for seven days.

The heavily damaged Harley had to be towed, though the rider escaped with only minor injuries.

The BC Highway Patrol says incidents like this are far too common on Highway 1 and hopes the video serves as a clear warning.“Consider this a warning to everyone,” Corporal McLaughlin added. “BC Highway Patrol can and will ticket drivers who pass on the right.”
