RCMP and BC Ambulance Service responded to the scene around 11:50 p.m. on June 27, 2026, after reports that a vehicle had hit pedestrians. Police say the driver’s dangerous actions struck two youths.

Despite immediate first aid from witnesses and efforts by paramedics, the 15-year-old succumbed to his injuries on scene.
A second youth was transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The driver, a 16-year-old from Vernon, fled the scene but was quickly located and arrested that night, thanks in part to cellphone video captured by multiple youth witnesses at the gathering.
He was later released from custody and is scheduled to appear in court on several potential criminal charges.
“The investigators were able to identify, locate and arrest the driver that night,” said Cpl. Tania Finn, media relations officer with the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP.
The BC Coroners Service is conducting an independent investigation into the death. The victim’s family has been notified and is receiving support.
RCMP continue to investigate and are asking anyone with additional information to contact the Vernon North Okanagan detachment at (250) 545-7171.
