Fortunately the rider and a riding partner were in cell range, allowing rescuers to obtain GPS coordinates.

Eight VSAR volunteers responded with ATVs, a side-by-side, a rescue toboggan and members of the Advanced Medical Team.

They assessed and treated the rider, splinted the injury, loaded the patient onto a stretcher and brought the biker down the trails to a waiting ambulance.

VSAR said it was several hours from the 9-1-1 call to arrival on scene. The group described that interval as typical, as volunteer members first leave work, collect gear and travel from the hall to a remote trailhead.

VSAR advised anyone heading into the backcountry to expect delays and carry essential supplies.
