Vernon Search and Rescue Celebrates Team Spirit and Service

VERNON - For more than six decades, the Vernon Search and Rescue (VSAR) team has been answering the call across the North Okanagan, a region spanning more than 7,500 square kilometres of rugged terrain.

According to VSAR, since forming in 1960, the volunteer group has grown to around 60 members, logging over 6,000 volunteer hours each year and responding to 60–80 rescue calls annually.

Since forming in 1960, the volunteer group has grown to around 60 members, logging over 6,000 volunteer hours each year and responding to 60–80 rescue calls annually.

Last weekend, VSAR members, families, and supporters gathered at the SAR Hall for a well-earned afternoon of food, laughter, and recognition.

Lunch was provided by Helmut’s Sausage Kitchen, with a hand from the North Okanagan Cycling Society.

The annual awards celebrated dedication and teamwork, with Chris J. and Francis W. receiving the Frank Whitecotton Award, and Kevin H. earning both the Saxon Peters and Ed Hornell Awards for leadership and community spirit.

Beyond the accolades, the event was a reminder that Vernon Search and Rescue is more than a team of skilled specialists, it’s a close-knit community of volunteers and families who support one another through every challenge.

The group expressed heartfelt thanks to local sponsors including Valhalla Pure Outfitters, Olympia Cycle and Ski, and Surplus Herbies Vernon for their continued support.
