Vernon RCMP: phones down at crosswalks
October 9 2026 - Vernon RCMP is asking pedestrians and drivers to put their phones away as daylight hours shorten.

October is Pedestrian Safety Month, and the Vernon North Okanagan detachment says people become harder to see as weather changes and evenings get darker.
Distraction adds to the risk.
“More and more we’re seeing people near traffic staring down at their phones,” said Constable Chris Terleski, the detachment’s media relations officer. “When you approach an intersection or step into a crosswalk, even if you have the right of way, put your phone away, look up, and ensure it’s safe to cross before stepping out. Messages, videos, and scrolling can wait.”
The release also warns that earbuds and headphones reduce awareness of nearby traffic.
Pedestrians are urged to use crosswalks, obey signals, wear bright or reflective clothing in low light, and make eye contact with drivers before stepping onto the road.
Drivers are asked to put phones away, watch crosswalks and intersections — especially when turning — and slow down for darkness, weather, and poor visibility.
The RCMP say road safety is a shared responsibility.
