Vernon recorded 161 pedestrian-involved traffic incidents 2020-2024

A review of ICBC’s Pedestrian Victim Count (2020–2024) shows Vernon recorded 161 pedestrian-involved traffic incidents over the five year period in the latest public data set.

That places Vernon 17th out of more than 40 B.C. municipalities in ICBC's public dataset.

Vancouver tops the provincial list with 2,960 pedestrian victims over the same period. Surrey is second with 1,191, followed by Burnaby with 852.

To put Vernon’s numbers into perspective, we compared incident totals against population.

With a 2024 population of roughly 49,000, Vernon’s five-year rate is approximately 3.3 pedestrian incidents per 1,000 residents.

For broader comparison:

  • Vancouver: ~756,000 people → 3.9 per 1,000

  • Surrey: ~700,000 → 1.7 per 1,000

  • Burnaby: ~299,000 → 2.8 per 1,000

Of course, these per-capita comparisons have limitations.

Population alone does not account for factors such as traffic volume, tourism, walkability, or major routes passing through smaller communities.

In Vernon’s case, Highway 97 and Highway 6 bring significant regional traffic directly into the city, which may influence local collision numbers.

Still, the ICBC figures show that pedestrian-vehicle incidents remain a concern province-wide. and Vernon sits in the upper-middle range both in total incidents and when adjusted for population.
