The Fatal Canada Day Collision Led to New Traffic Light
February 21, 2025: A Vernon man has been charged in connection with the death of a Splatsin elder who was fatally struck by a vehicle on Canada Day 2023.
Court documents show Marvyn George Machura is facing a charge of driving without due care and attention under the Motor Vehicle Act in relation to the death of 62-year-old Harry J. Jones Jr.

Jones was crossing Highway 97A near Canyon Road in Enderby on July 1, 2023, when he was hit by a southbound vehicle.
Despite efforts by emergency responders, Jones died at the scene.
Machura, a local musician, remained at the scene and cooperated with police.
In response to the tragedy, the flashing pedestrian light at the crosswalk next to the intersection was replaced with a full traffic signal.
Machura's next scheduled appearance is at the Salmon Arm Courthouse, February 25, 2025.
A charge is not a conviction, and Machura is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
